Your newsletter is too long

Structure Your Newsletter

Alright, good people. Stella’s gonna sit you down for a little talk about the “birds & the bees.” Of writing your newsletter.

Mark Twain said, I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”

And judging by some of the newsletters y’all are sending out, Stella gets the feeling that you don’t have time to write short letters, either.

If you catch my drift.

I just talked to a smart business owner who admitted to spending 6 hours putting together a newsletter each month. 6 hours! No wonder so many of you … Read the rest >

Inside voice, outside voice

Get your message out there

Don’t use your “inside voice” to promote your business.

It will bomb every time.

This is a rookie mistake when it comes to marketing. Especially if you are accustomed to being direct and plain talking. That’s the American way, right? Say what you mean, and don’t sugar coat it.

This alone will cut your income off at the ankles.

As poet Emily Dickinson wrote, “Tell all the truth but tell it slant/success in circuit lies.” This is the clearest advice out there, when it comes to learning to speaking the language of your ideal clients.

Tell all the truth, but … Read the rest >

Ode to open spaces

Make room for spaciousness

In marketing, as in life, you’ve got leave room to breathe.

Stella is reminded of this as she spends the next month running her business from one of her fave places on the planet: Bozeman, Montana.

That’s right: big sky country.

On my walk this afternoon, I was thinking about spaciousness.

The idea came up on a call with my mastermind today. The open question was: is it better to stock up on all the home study kits, free reports, videos, and teleseminars you can get your hands on… or not?

You’ll love this: Stella got up on a short … Read the rest >

What can you learn from a horse whisperer?

Are you coming from a place of compassion?

From the “it’s all connected” files: a quick run-down of a documentary Stella had the good fortune to watch yesterday.

BUCK follows the work and life of Buck Brannaman, an American cowboy who runs training clinics for horsemen across the country. Or, as he likes to say, he helps horses with people problems.

What’s remarkable, though, is the way he goes about his work. There are some valuable marketing and sales lessons in there, for folks like you and me.

The old-school method of training horses was, apparently, to “break” them. Strong arm them into understanding, in no uncertain terms, … Read the rest >

The 5 messages good marketing whispers

Lean in and listen

Good writing looks people in the eye.

And when you get your copywriting skills down, your ability to make filthy lucre kicks into high gear. If you’re willing to get your hands dirty.

This is because most people don’t write like they talk. Especially when they are in business.

Why? Because we have these goofy ideas of what “being in business” means. We’ve been hook, line & sinkered on the idea that you’ve got to be professional when you’re in business.

Well, hold up. You actually do need to be professional when you’re in business. But to be clear: you … Read the rest >

Lighten up your inbox

Silence is golden.

But not only that… Your email inbox is a sacred space, too.

Do you treat your email inbox like a precious pool of valued communion and info? Where you hear from people—personal and professional—that you actually like?

Or have you allowed Tom, Dick, and Harry to send you tripe you aren’t putting into action…and it’s cluttering up your inbox and making you bananas?

Now hear this: Stella doesn’t care how many freebies you’ve scored because you’ve given up your email address. That’s a fine strategy when you’re shoestringing it.

But if that means you … Read the rest >

What's a biffy got to do with it?

Peace and quiet in the East Wing

This might gross some of you out.

Part of Stella’s library is housed in the W.C. It’s nice to sit and read something smart without interruption. And in this modern world, there are precious few places left that offer such pure retreat.

My dad would come home from work and head to “the office” with a copy of the local paper. His mom, my grandma*, a proper Swedish Lutheran with a wicked sense of humor, sometimes receives my calls in “the East Wing.”

In other words, the biffy.

Anyhoo. Right now, in la petite librairie, there’s WIRED, Vanity Fair, … Read the rest >

Pulling back the curtain on getting clients

Are you hiding behind your marketing?

There’s a myth out there, and it’s making me crazy. Let’s bust it, shall we?

It goes something like this: to get clients, you need a slick website, fancy business cards, and a whole bunch of marketing “stuff.” As in, things you send or give people. Professional things. Impressive things. “Look how many certifications I have and what schools I’ve attended” things.

Horsefeathers.

You don’t need that stuff to attract clients.

(Recovering Perfectionists: I’m talking specifically to you, here. I know this is hard to believe, but you don’t need to have your whole brand or entire program … Read the rest >

Got freedom? [plus 2 resources]

Dear reader,

What if, each year on July 4th, we paused to consider what has brought more freedom into our lives?

And here’s what I’ve come up with:

My business is a path to freedom. I started Stella Orange, Wordsmith a couple years ago, because I love adventure. I was looking for a new frontier—something challenging, where I was called to grow, learn, explore, push my edges and serve. That’s the fuel for the fire in my belly.

Back in my 20s, it meant I took teenagers on long distance bike trips—London to Rome (1,500 miles, 12 kids, … Read the rest >

5 Ways to Make Your Website Charmingly Useful

Is your website a snoozer?

Have you ever talked to a person who isn’t much fun at all?

They just go on and on. About themselves, mostly.

They don’t ask any questions about you or your day. They make zero attempt to get to know you. It’s almost like they are running on autopilot. Lights on, nobody’s home.

You may even leave the conversation—if you can call it that—with a feeling of depletion. Or mild irritation.

On the other hand, a person who is fabulous company has a totally different approach to conversation.

She is lively. Fun. Aware of your time—and the preciousness of it. … Read the rest >
