HOLD UP - WHO AM I?

Stella Redux

Hello. I’m Stella Orange. And I’m a copywriter. I study the art of writing so people want to keep reading… and gets them so excited that they NEED to take action. Three things you should know about me:

First, I’m trained as a teacher. My first year out of grad school, I taught at an alternative high school in Seattle. I taught low-income, at-risk kids with substance abuse issues and undiagnosed learning disabilities. As it turns out, that wasn’t much of a cash cow. I cleaned houses in the afternoons to finance my teaching habit.

In other words, I wasn’t always a successful entrepreneur. I built my business— which was full within 8 months of starting and is on track to cross multiple 6-figures this year—from zero. So I know what it’s like to build your business on a shoestring.

Second, I learned copywriting by trial-and-error, raising money for a community art center in Montana. I got really good at writing about why kilns, field trips to art galleries, artists, and community is worth funding. I know what works, what people respond to, and I can save you a lot of time and wasted energy.

Third, I studied playwriting. I also wrote and directed plays at the local theater in Montana. (I even spent a summer in NYC at learning to write for the stage at NYU.) One of my plays—about two janitors in the White House who decide to change the course of history—even won an award. Playwriting and marketing have something in common: it’s all telling a story in a way that “plugs in” to our emotions. I teach my clients how to do this, too. Theater! (Which there will PLENTY of in this course, by the way).

Why I talk most people OUT of hiring my team to write their website for them…

As crazy as it sounds, I try to talk most business owners out of hiring us to write their website for them. Why?

Because you have A LOT of writing to do for your business. And for that copy to actually work, you have to be clear about:

  • What problem your solve
  • How you work with clients
  • How your life story positions you perfectly for the work you do now

Through writing, you get to know your business from the inside out. And this information is as precious as gold to your business.

That’s a task that you can’t really hire out. It belongs to YOU. Because for the rest of the life of your business, YOU are going to be the one communicating the value of your work. In writing. In video. In conversation. In emails. Onstage. Wherever you are, you need to know this.
