3 myths about marketing that will sink you.

Let’s do some marketing myth-busting, shall we?

Myth #1: Marketing is sleazy.
This is a worldview that must die if your business is going to live and thrive. Last time I checked, the definition of marketing doesn’t include lying or selling something that doesn’t work.

If you have negativity around the idea of marketing, I’m curious why. Have you never seen someone do with love in her heart? Have you gotten burned by someone selling you something in the past? Have you not met people who are totally awesome AND who are promoting their work in a wholehearted, joyful way?

Myth #2: I promote my business with “word of mouth.”
I love that your clients and network sends you business. That’s great! But do you have ENOUGH business? Would you like more? And do you want to be more in control of the flow of clients coming to you?

Marketing really is just spreading the “word of mouth” about your biz even farther. And because smart marketing is systematic (read: you send a newsletter more than “once in awhile when I’m not busy”), you get a steadier stream of clients, and more of them. Hollah!

Myth #3: I took someone’s class/listened to a talk/read a book on marketing, so I’m all set.
Ah, grasshopper. Do you want more clients? Are you looking to grow your biz? Then it’s going to take more than one go to get that job done. The truth is, marketing is a muscle. You don’t go for one training run to get ready for the marathon. You don’t go to the gym once and say “that’s done. I’m fit for life.”

Aren’t you a lifelong learner, anyway? So why so shy when it comes to the big M?

Maybe it seems so big, it’s overwhelming. Maybe you think you don’t know enough yet to do your marketing. Know what I say to that?
