You gotta WANT to go for it in your business
You know what’s pissing me off?
Marriages that shelter mediocre businesses.
In my talks with business owners, there sometimes is a moment where I instantly get that the person I am talking to has an income source that has nothing to do with her business.
And it’s her husband.
Let me say that I have clients and colleagues who have an income-earning partner… and who STILL hustle their buns.
But there is a phenomenon where a marriage causes a women to shrink—instead of expand—when it comes to her business. And from where I sit, that sucks.
Here’s what I’ve noticed: I ask her what her problem is, and she tells me. Not enough clients. Not clear on how she works with her clients. She tried marketing her business in a certain way that didn’t get the results she wanted. She has spent 4 months perfecting an ebook/video series/group program… but has no idea if anyone wants to buy it. Her income is down. She’s not sure what to do to get it back up.
Now, what happens when I hear this? I start drooling. I LOVE this s***. I LOVE figuring out how to tinker with your marketing and your message and your behavior so you get what you want. Again and again and again.
But when I ask her if she’s fired up to change her situation, I hear a shrug.
“No, not right now, really.”
Huh.
Maybe I don’t get it because I’m not married. Maybe it’s because my business isn’t some feel good fest where I get to talk about my feelings about being in business… or go to conferences to “work on my mindset” or “explore my divine feminine.”
I sing for my supper. So do my clients.
My clients actually want to BE in business—the most lucrative form of therapy there is—and get their asses kicked and kick ass and inspire others to do all this, too.
That’s why they work with me.
So, here is my open note to women who don’t really “need” to grow their businesses:
If you aren’t hungry for the money, what ARE you hungry for?
I mean, you don’t have to KEEP the money you make. I will help you build a 6-figure business so that you can give it all away to Women for Women or Kiva. I will show you how to take your talent and package it and market the heck out of it.
But no one else can be hungry for you.
You gotta WANT to go for it in your business. That’s what it takes to get these amazing results that you see. (Or lie. You can lie about it, too.)
And if hustling in your business isn’t your thing right now—hey!—at least you’re clear. But know that there’s no mentor or coach in the world that can hand you success on a silver platter… or give you the sensation of stretching outside your comfort zone and claiming the prize of winning, no matter what.

LOVE this one. I had a realization moment last week that my recent lack of marketing/message has been bringing me awful clients that I don’t want. I’ve got a few referrals, and it’s all for people who really don’t want to work on feeling better, don’t really seem to be driven to do anything for their health, they just think they “should” do something. That’s not who I want! Thankfully this has helped me decide to refocus my energy on getting the right word out there to get the right people. Thank you!

Rachel,
Good. That’s happened to me, too… and it’s an opportunity to refocus on what we are “putting out there” in order to attract a different sort of client.
For me, I had this lightbulb go off over my head, when I realized I wanted more for these ladies then they wanted for themselves. Classic client attraction issue. “I want to serve people who are HUNGRY to go for it” was the insight I got from that.
Rock on!
