Act 1: The Initiation

Hello! Glad you made it here. This page contains the first 3 videos in a 9-part series where I walk you through what the hero story is, and make the case that YOU are a hero on a journey. I’m doing this because the more people who have the vocabulary to think of their lives as a hero’s journey, the better! If you want to take these ideas further, there are writing prompts that go along with each video. You can use them to explore and reflect on your own. And if you’d like to do this with other people, I host a workshop called Writing Your Way Home that might be of use. Check it!

Station 1: Sitting on the ‘couch of comfort’

Every hero’s story begins… on the ‘couch of comfort.’

WRITING PROMPTS:

1) Heroes are likeable yet imperfect. Imagine you are the hero of a book or a movie. What’s likeable about you? What’s imperfect? What’s your couch of comfort look like?

2) When was a time in your life when you left your ‘couch of comfort? How were you challenged? How did that challenge change you?

3) The Reluctant Hero dialogue

Someone else: “You’re my hero.”
You: “No, I can’t possibly be.”

Write this as a dialogue between you and another person. In the first version, write it so you are telling someone they are your hero. Keep writing until you convince them. In the second, write it so that someone is telling you you’re their hero. Keep writing until they convince you.

4) Is now the time to sit on your couch of comfort – or to leave it? Explain.

This is part 1 of a 9-part series.

Station 2: Hearing the ‘call to more’

Is life calling you to more? As heroes, we hear phones that don’t ring for everybody – but they ring for us. Today, we look at what happens when you’re cozy and doing great… and then something HAPPENS.

WRITING PROMPTS

Write for yourself – no need to post it here. Grab your journal or the nearest scrap of paper and just write, freestyle. Or, save it until tonight when you’re in bed or first thing tomorrow when you’re fresh and getting centered for the day.

1)   What’s calling to you right now?

2)   How do you feel about that?

Station 3: Refusing the Call

Just because you know there’s more out there for you doesn’t mean you’re all HECK YEAH, I’M GOING FOR IT!

WRITING PROMPTS

1)   How have you ‘refused the call’ in the past?

2)   What’s calling to you right now?

3)   Are you heeding that call – why or why not?

Stay tuned for Part 2: The Challenge…

We’ll post links to the other videos and writing prompts here when they’re ready to be seen. In the meantime, check out my Writing Your Way Home workshop — the next session starts March 21.

Stella Orange is a copywriter who helps people put their work into words. For eight years, she wrote email campaigns that resulted in more than a million dollars in sales for her clients. In that time, Stella also taught popular marketing writing workshops to business owners on both sides of the Atlantic -- and a few in Australia and New Zealand. In 2017, Stella cofounded a creative and consulting shop offering a complete and slightly unorthodox line of business advising and marketing services. She continues to write copy and advise clients on customer delight, how to resonate with more sophisticated, discerning clientele in your marketing, and just who, exactly, your ideal clients are. Stella is the founder of Show Up And Write, a weekly writing group and writes a letter every two weeks or so (here’s the sign-up). She lives with the Philosopher and their two kiddos in Buffalo, New York, a fifteen-minute bike ride to the Canadian border.
